Mazda CX-90 2025: Refined and Versatile

Unlike most other mainstream brands, Mazda does not have a luxury division. That is why, in my opinion, the Japanese automaker has developed a unique approach and philosophy that has allowed it to elevate its vehicles to a whole new level. Mazda operates somewhere between mass-market brands and luxury brands. The CX-90 is the perfect example of this. It stands out with its sophisticated driving experience, high-quality materials, and overall refinement, all while remaining within a price range that suits most buyers.

The CX-90 is a relatively new addition to the Mazda lineup, replacing the highly successful CX-9. Needless to say, this is a very different vehicle. The CX-90 is even more refined and modern. Every detail has been carefully designed to offer the ultimate experience, thanks to the new platform specifically developed for the CX-90 and its twin, the CX-70. Unlike the latter, the CX-90 features a third-row seat, making it particularly interesting and versatile.

Range and Pricing

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 lineup includes five trim levels for the standard version. Its starting price ranges from $45,900 to $63,300. This price variation is well justified, and let me tell you, the Signature trim, sitting at the top of the range, feels like a completely different vehicle. The plug-in hybrid version, on the other hand, offers three trim levels, with prices ranging from $54,900 to $64,350.

Category and Competition

The Mazda CX-90 belongs to the three-row midsize SUV category, a segment where versatility and well-rounded capabilities are essential. Fortunately, Mazda's SUV has plenty to impress. It is a vehicle that caters to both weekday commuting and weekend adventures.

Competitors: Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Grand Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas.

Design and Technology

The designers did an excellent job with the CX-90's exterior. Every time I see one, I feel like I'm looking at a luxury model. The attention to detail is remarkable. The CX-90 features a large, refined grille, slim headlights, and an aggressive front bumper. However, what adds an extra touch of elegance, in my opinion, are the badges on the front fenders near the doors. Typically, this kind of detail is reserved for high-end models.

Inside, the same level of sophistication applies. The steering wheel shape, the position of the infotainment screen, the center console layout, the dashboard design, and the trim textures all make you feel like you're in a luxury vehicle. This feeling only intensifies as you move up the trim levels. In fact, the only thing truly missing from the CX-90 to rival some luxury models is a premium ambient lighting system.

Mazda has never been a leader in technology, particularly when it comes to its infotainment system, but the one in the CX-90 is better than before. Navigation is smooth, and it becomes pleasant to use once you get used to it, though it's still not as intuitive as one might hope. However, the SUV's other technologies work very well and are quite effective, especially driver-assistance features like lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.

Performance

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 offers three powertrain options, starting with a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six mild-hybrid engine producing 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. The automaker also offers a high-output version of this engine, boosting power to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the plug-in hybrid version combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The CX-90 PHEV offers an all-electric driving range of 42 kilometers.

Weak Points

Some low-quality plastics inside.
Sportier ride than the average SUV.
Modest electric range for the PHEV versions.

Strong Points

Fun to drive with plenty of power.
Eye-catching design with premium finishes.
One of the most comfortable models in its category.

Signature Element

The Mazda CX-90 proves that you can enjoy a premium vehicle without paying an exorbitant price.

Final Word

I must say that I really like the direction Mazda has taken with its vehicles in recent years. The Japanese automaker is focusing on luxury and performance, and it's working out very well. The CX-90 is an impressive vehicle that you should seriously consider.
