Mazda CX-70: We'll have to wait a bit longer

In the midst of transformation, Mazda's lineup continues to attract new enthusiasts every time a new model is released. With a few exceptions, the Japanese manufacturer hits a home run every time a new vehicle is added to its lineup, as we've seen with the recent CX-90 and CX-50.

The next success for the brand is expected to be the CX-70, a vehicle that has been eagerly awaited for quite some time. It should be noted that Mazda currently offers no models in the two-row midsize SUV segment, which is gaining in popularity.

A Little Patience

Although no official date has been mentioned, it is known that the CX-70 will hit the market in 2024. At least, that's what Tom Donnelly mentioned in an interview with Automotive News. Unfortunately, the CEO of the North American brand did not provide any further details. Originally, the CX-70 was supposed to make its debut by the end of 2023.

Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid

What makes the Mazda CX-70 so interesting is that it is based on the same platform as the CX-90. It will, therefore, offer substantially the same mechanical options, starting with the 3.3-liter inline 6-cylinder turbocharged engine. The power of this engine varies from 280 to 340 horsepower depending on the chosen version. This engine benefits from mild hybrid technology, allowing it to deliver ample power while maintaining a reasonable average fuel consumption. A plug-in hybrid powertrain will also be available, combining a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a total power output of 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain is coupled with a 17.8 kWh battery pack, which allows it to store enough energy to provide an electric-only range of about 42 kilometers with the CX-90. Similar performance can be expected from the CX-70.

As for the size of the CX-70, it should have roughly the same dimensions as the CX-90. This means a more spacious interior and a larger cargo space. Needless to say, this is a model that we are eagerly anticipating.
