Mazda CX-5 2026: A Success Story

Earlier this summer, Mazda unveiled its brand-new CX-5, an announcement that made quite a buzz. In case you haven't noticed, all of the brand's SUVs have been replaced by new models with two-digit names. You can probably see where this is going. In theory, the Mazda CX-5 should have been replaced as well, but the model is so popular and well-loved by customers that the Japanese automaker decided to keep it in the lineup. In fact, things go even further since the CX-5 has received a major update for 2026, proving that it still holds a solid place within Mazda's range.

The improvements to the 2026 model are numerous, starting with its bold and elegant design inspired by the CX-70 and CX-90. The CX-5 looks more serious than ever, and it suits it well. Its cabin is more modern and packed with cutting-edge technologies. This third generation of the model has everything it takes to impress on all fronts.

Lineup and Pricing

Canadian pricing had not yet been announced at the time of writing, but a slight increase compared to the 2025 model is to be expected since this is a new generation. For reference, the CX-5 currently ranges between $32,900 and $45,550.

Segment and Competition

Even though the Mazda CX-5 competes in one of the most crowded segments in the market, it stands somewhat apart. It offers a level of refinement and premium finish that is hard to find among its direct rivals.

Rivals: Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-50, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan.

Design and Technology

The new Mazda CX-5's design is the result of remarkable craftsmanship by the brand's designers. They managed to preserve the essence and dynamism of the previous CX-5 while modernizing it and aligning its silhouette with the rest of the lineup. This new CX-5 is simply irresistible and will undoubtedly turn heads once it hits the market.

One of the first things that struck me inside the CX-5 is the absence of a logo on the steering wheel. Instead, you'll find the word "Mazda" spelled out in an elegant typeface. This design touch also appears on the tailgate. The quality of the finish is impressive, and all attention is drawn to the massive 15.6-inch screen, which houses a multimedia system that has been significantly improved compared to the previous generation.

Performance

For now, only one powertrain option has been confirmed for the all-new Mazda CX-5. It will feature the classic 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a powertrain that has proven itself for years. It delivers 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, which is nearly identical to last year—only one pound-foot less, a difference you won't notice on the road. The six-speed automatic transmission carries over, and all-wheel drive is standard. While this combination may not be as flashy as what some competitors offer, it has proven itself in both driving enjoyment and fuel efficiency.

Weak Points

We would like to see more mechanical options.

Strong Points

A comfortable vehicle, enjoyable to drive, and packed with advanced technologies.

Signature Element

Mazda's SUV delivers a mix of luxurious and premium features at a remarkably accessible price for its segment.

Final Word

We often tend to think there are only two categories of vehicles: mainstream and luxury. That's not entirely true, as some brands have found success by positioning themselves in between—Mazda being a perfect example. With vehicles like the CX-5, Mazda delivers style, driving dynamics, and an overall experience comparable to premium brands, while keeping prices solidly in the mainstream bracket. The CX-5 offers an outstanding value proposition, which is why Mazda simply can't afford to let it go. Since its debut in 2012, more than 4.5 million CX-5s have been sold worldwide, including over 300,000 units in Canada alone. So, there's no need to ask whether the CX-5 lives up to its reputation—the numbers speak for themselves.
