Mazda CX-30 2025: Playing in the Big Leagues

The Mazda CX-30 belongs to a category that mainly features two types of vehicles. First, there are entry-level models that fully embrace their status. Then, there are subcompact SUVs that we appreciate for their size and refuse to compromise on everything else. Few models fall into this second category, but the 2025 Mazda CX-30 is one of them.

The Japanese automaker's small SUV introduces several new features this year, starting with the integration of Alexa, Amazon's legendary system. The new Aero Gray color has also been added, a shade directly from the MX-5 palette.

Trims and Pricing

For 2025, the Mazda CX-30 is available in six trims in Canada. The lineup starts with the CX-30 GX, the entry-level version with a starting price of $28,950. Don't be fooled into thinking this is a stripped-down model, far from it. However, if you want more, you can opt for the GS trim at $31,850. Here, you get more appealing features like rain-sensing wipers and stunning 18-inch aluminum wheels. Next is the GS with a luxury package. This version offers a more refined interior, 10-way power seats, an electric sunroof, and more. It's priced at $34,050, and it's well worth it.

Next up is the GT version, offering more safety features and a more appealing look for $37,850. Then, there's the GT Turbo version at $40,250. As its name suggests, this one benefits from a turbocharged engine. Finally, at the top of the lineup is the Suna edition, priced at $41,000, which remains very reasonable for a vehicle of this caliber.

Category and Competition

Subcompact SUVs are popular for their price and compact size. However, they often lack luxurious equipment or high-quality interiors, pushing buyers towards larger or luxury models. The Mazda CX-30, on the other hand, offers the best of both worlds, making it feel far from a basic entry-level model. In fact, it could easily compete with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1, or Audi Q3 in many aspects, which is why I find it such an appealing option.

Competitors: Buick Envista, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro, Kia Seltos, Mini Countryman, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Mitsubishi RVR, Nissan Kicks, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Corolla Cross, Volkswagen Taos.

Design and Technology

The Mazda CX-30 boasts a striking design with a stout silhouette and pronounced curves, giving it a muscular appearance that certainly turns heads. At the same time, the designers avoided extremes, ensuring the CX-30 will remain stylish for years to come. Mazda has done an excellent job with the wheels and exterior colors.

As for the interior, I would describe it as understated and refined. It feels like sitting in a luxury vehicle, both in terms of finish and style. I also have to say Mazda has made great strides in technology in recent years. Its multimedia system is more user-friendly, and I love the fact that you can communicate with Alexa.

Performance

The 2025 Mazda CX-30 offers two mechanical options, starting with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. For those seeking more exhilarating performance, the Japanese automaker also offers a turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. No matter which version you choose, the driving experience is always dynamic, but I must admit the turbocharged engine's performance is particularly impressive.

Weaknesses

The 6-speed automatic transmission feels a bit outdated. Its sporty handling might be too much in certain situations.

Strengths

It's an eye-catching vehicle with a premium interior that has everything to please. It's also a lot of fun to drive.

Signature Element

The 2025 Mazda CX-30 gives the impression of being a luxury model at a mainstream price.

Final Word

Mazda is one of the few manufacturers not associated with a luxury brand, and for that reason, I believe their vehicles offer more than the average.
