Mazda CX-30 2024: A Different Philosophy

Mazda is an automaker that has its own way of doing things and doesn't aim to outperform its competitors. The brand has been successful thanks to its optimized products, quality finishing, and the performance of its engines. In fact, if Mazda vehicles weren't so affordable, one could believe the brand is part of the luxury and prestige car manufacturers. The most ironic thing about all this is that Mazda doesn't have a luxury division like most of its rivals, and that's why the brand offers such interesting vehicles. Despite being an entry-level model, the CX-30 doesn't give off that impression at all, which is what makes it so intriguing.

There aren't many new features for 2024 since the model's introduction to the market is still relatively recent. However, the Mazda CX-30 also gets a special Suna edition this year. It comes with enhanced standard equipment and some unique features.

Range and Pricing

For 2024, the Mazda CX-30 lineup consists of four versions. First, there's the GX model with a starting price of $28,150. It's simply astonishing that such a vehicle can be obtained for under $30,000. If you want more equipment, there's the GS version starting at $31,450. This one notably includes 18-inch wheels, a heated steering wheel, and some additional safety technologies. According to Mazda, this is the most popular version. Then, there's a leap forward with the GT version, starting at $37,550. Here, you get all the tech gadgets you could dream of and slightly upgraded finishing. Finally, there's the Suna version, which sits at the top of the range with a starting price of $40,700.

Category and Competition

The Mazda CX-30 belongs to the category of subcompact SUVs for the general public, but to be honest with you, it has more in common with luxury subcompact SUVs, especially in terms of the GT and Suna versions. Ultimately, I believe it falls somewhere in between, which is a very good thing for fans of the model.

Rivals: Buick Encore GX, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Jeep Renegade, Kia Niro, Kia Seltos, Mini Countryman, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Mitsubishi RVR, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Corolla Cross, Volkswagen Taos.

Design and Technologies

I must say I really like the design of the Mazda CX-30, especially regarding the bodywork. The Japanese manufacturer's small SUV boasts a sturdy and muscular silhouette. Its lines are aggressive, and the front end has a certain character. Let's just say it's a model that stands out from the rest and doesn't go unnoticed. The Japanese manufacturer has also made excellent choices in terms of the color palette this year. In my opinion, Mazda offers one of the most beautiful shades of red in the industry.

The interior design of the Mazda CX-30 is rather understated and elegant. It's not for everyone, but it's the kind of design that ages the best. The interior finishing quality is impressive. In fact, the only thing missing from the Japanese manufacturer's small SUV at this level is high-end materials. In terms of technology, the CX-30 doesn't have much to fault. However, its multimedia system is not perfect and requires some adaptation time.

Performance

Mazda has decided to discontinue the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine for 2024, which is good news. This leaves us with two mechanical options this year, starting with the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. It delivers 191 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. This combination allows the Japanese manufacturer's small SUV to achieve an average fuel consumption of 9.0 L/100 km in the city and 7.1 L/100 km on the highway. For more athletic performance, there's the turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. This one produces 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque with premium gasoline. It gets the same 6-speed transmission as the regular engine, and all-wheel drive is also standard. Normally, this type of engine is found in larger vehicles or sports cars. Therefore, let me tell you that driving the Mazda CX-30 is quite inspiring.

Weaknesses

The price increases rapidly from one version to another. The manufacturer clearly needs to make efforts regarding the multimedia system.

Strengths

It's an eye-catching vehicle with elevated finishing. Its value proposition is very attractive, except perhaps for the base model. The driving pleasure is real with the turbocharged engine.

Signature Element

The spirited driving experience and muscular style of the CX-30 make it a particularly interesting vehicle for people who value both the journey and the destination equally.

Closing Thoughts

The Mazda CX-30 stands out from the crowd, and that's what makes it such an interesting model.
